FAQs

Where is The Doctor Clinics based?

The Doctor Clinics Manchester We are a private doctor manchester and based in Manchester with our main clinic in the Prestwich area.

What's your privacy policy at The Doctor Clinics?

We aim to abide by the Caldicott Principles of patient privacy. We use a software that is encrypted and have privacy protocols in place to ensure your private medical information remains safe.

How can I book an appointment with a private GP online near me?

You can usually book a private GP appointment online within a couple of minutes. At The Doctor Clinics, most people use our online booking system on our GP consultations page to choose the type of consultation they want — video, express, or a longer in-person slot — and pick a time that suits their day. Once you book, you get an immediate confirmation with clear directions and what to expect at the appointment. Many patients prefer this route because it avoids phone queues and lets them secure a same-day or next-day slot without any hassle.

What does a private GP near me cost?

Prices vary depending on the clinic and the length of the consultation, but most people find private GP fees surprisingly straightforward. At The Doctor Clinics, appointments are clearly listed both on our GP consultations page and on our ADHD assessments page so you know exactly what you’re paying for before you book. Our video consultations start at £50, the 20-minute Express appointment is £89, and a longer, more detailed 30-minute consultation is £129.

Patients tend to choose us because the pricing is transparent, there’s no subscription or registration fee, and you can usually be seen the same day — which can save a lot of stress when you just need someone to help quickly.

Can private GP refer to the NHS?

Yes — a private GP can refer you into the NHS when it’s clinically appropriate. Tyis can happen in our video consultations as well as our standard GP consultations. It is worth noting that there is usually an extra charge for a referral. In practice, it works much the same as seeing your usual NHS GP, but without the long wait to be assessed first. After your consultation at The Doctor Clinics, we prepare a clear medical summary and send it directly to your NHS practice so the referral can be processed through the standard NHS pathways.

Most patients use this when they want a quicker initial assessment but still wish to continue their care within the NHS system for scans, specialist clinics, or hospital services.

Can a private GP refer to NHS specialist?

Yes — a private GP can refer you to an NHS specialist, as long as the referral meets the usual NHS criteria. After your consultation at The Doctor Clinics, we create a detailed clinical letter and send it to your NHS practice so the request can go through the standard NHS referral system.

Many patients choose this route because it allows them to be assessed quickly in the private setting, while still accessing NHS hospital care, scans or specialist clinics when appropriate.

You can find out more by booking a video consultation or another consultations type available on our GP consultations page.

Can a private GP prescribe diazepam?

Private GPs can legally prescribe diazepam, but most reputable clinics — including ours — are very cautious with this type of medication. Diazepam falls under controlled drug regulations, and it carries risks around dependence, sedation and safety, so it’s only prescribed in very specific, short-term situations where it’s clearly clinically justified.

At The Doctor Clinics, we focus on safer, evidence-based options first, and in most cases we do not prescribe diazepam or similar sedatives. If someone needs ongoing management for anxiety, sleep issues or muscle spasms, we normally explore alternative treatments or arrange the right specialist support instead.

We do prescribe some controlled drugs in our ADHD clinic under very strict clinical circumstances when we are doing our ADHD assessments but they are not benzodiazapines such as Diazepam etc.

Patients tend to appreciate this approach because it keeps their care safe, transparent and fully in line with current UK medical guidelines.

Can a private GP issue an NHS prescription?

No — a private GP can’t issue an NHS prescription. NHS prescriptions can only be generated by clinicians working within an NHS contract and using the NHS prescribing system. Please check our private prescriptions service page for further information.

What we can do at The Doctor Clinics is provide a private prescription when it’s clinically needed, and we send a full consultation summary to your NHS GP so your regular practice is aware of any changes to your care. If the medication is suitable for NHS prescribing, your NHS GP may decide to continue it under their usual prescribing rules.

Can private GP give a sick note?

Yes — a private GP can issue a sick note, and it’s valid for employers just like an NHS “fit note.” Most people use a private GP when they need the note quickly or can’t get an appointment with their usual NHS practice.

At The Doctor Clinics, we provide sick notes after a proper medical assessment found on the GP Consultations page, and they can cover work absences, adjustments, phased returns, or fitness to work. Many patients appreciate the clarity and the speed, especially when they need documentation on the same day without waiting for an NHS appointment.

Can a private GP prescribe Mounjaro?

Private GPs can prescribe Mounjaro in the UK, but only within strict safety rules — and most clinics, including ours, are very careful with it. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a powerful medication with specific eligibility criteria, monitoring requirements and potential side-effects, so it’s not something we routinely prescribe.

At The Doctor Clinics, we only consider medications like this after a detailed medical review, found in our GP consultations page and only when it’s clearly safe, appropriate and evidence-based. In many cases, patients are better served through structured weight-management support, lifestyle guidance, or referral to specialist services.

We avoid casual or cosmetic use of these medicines, which is why most people value our approach — it keeps treatment safe, medically justified and fully aligned with current UK guidance.

Can a private GP prescribe controlled drugs?

Private GPs can legally prescribe controlled drugs, but most reputable clinics take a very careful, guideline-led approach — and that includes us. These medicines carry higher risks around dependence, safety and monitoring, so they’re only appropriate in clearly justified, clinically assessed situations.

At The Doctor Clinics we generally do not prescribe controlled drugs such as strong sedatives, opioids or dependency-forming medications. We do prescribe controlled drugs such as Methylphenidate or Elvanse in our speciliast ADHD clinic.

If a patient’s condition genuinely requires this type of treatment, we usually arrange the right specialist referral or work alongside their NHS GP so the prescribing is managed safely within an appropriate framework.

Patients tend to prefer this approach because it keeps their care evidence-based, transparent and fully aligned with UK medical standards.

Can a private GP access NHS records?

Private GPs don’t have automatic access to your NHS medical record. Your NHS notes sit within the NHS system and can only be viewed by clinicians working inside it.

What we can do at The Doctor Clinics is ask for relevant information from your NHS practice when it’s needed for safe care — but this always requires your permission, and the NHS surgery has to agree to share it.

After every consultation, we also send a clear summary back to your NHS GP so your main record stays up to date. Most patients like this because it keeps everything joined up without handing full access across systems.

Can a private GP prescribe antibiotics?

Yes — a private GP can prescribe antibiotics when they’re genuinely needed. The key is a proper assessment, because many infections don’t require antibiotics and using them unnecessarily can cause more harm than good.

At The Doctor Clinics, we follow the same national antimicrobial guidelines used across the NHS. If your symptoms suggest a bacterial infection, we’ll prescribe the right medication and explain how to take it safely. We can do this both in our video consultations, GP express and GP standard appointments. See our GP consultations page for all the appointment types we offer. If antibiotics aren’t appropriate, we’ll outline what’s actually causing the symptoms and what will help you recover quicker.

Patients usually appreciate this balanced approach — fast access to a doctor, but with careful prescribing that avoids unnecessary risks.

Can a private GP prescribe antidepressants?

Yes — a private GP can prescribe antidepressants, as long as it’s safe and clinically appropriate. The process is similar to what you’d expect with an NHS GP: we listen to your symptoms, explore any underlying triggers, rule out red flags, and make sure medication is actually the right option.

At The Doctor Clinics, we regularly manage anxiety, low mood and stress-related conditions, but we never rush into prescribing. If antidepressants are suitable, we explain the choice of medication, what to expect in the first couple of weeks, and how follow-up reviews work. See our mental health clinic page and our psychiatric clinic page as well as our ADHD clinic page for further information. If another approach would be safer — such as therapy, lifestyle adjustments or referral to a specialist — we guide you through that instead.

Most people value the combination of fast access and thoughtful, evidence-based care, especially when they’ve been waiting a long time for NHS support.

How to find a private GP near me?

You are able to find a GP near you by using a search engine such as google and searching a term such as private gp near me or searching the term private gp and the anme of your area such as private GP Manchester.

You can usually find a private GP near you by searching for clinics that offer same-day or next-day appointments and clearly list their fees and services. Most people start with Google Maps and look for terms like “private doctor near me” or “private GP Manchester,” then check reviews, pricing and availability.

At The Doctor Clinics, patients often tell us they found us because our booking page shows real-time availability and transparent pricing, so they could see exactly what they were getting before committing. A good private GP service should make it easy to book online, offer quick access, and provide clear information about the type of care you can expect.

Is it worth paying for a private gp?

For many people, paying for a private GP is worth it because of the speed and the quality of access. The main benefit is being seen quickly — often the same day — without the pressure of rushed appointments.  See our GP consultations page to view our appointment types and you will see that we are often able to see you very quickly, compared with weeks to months wait for an NHS GP. You also have more time to explain what’s going on, ask questions, and get a clear plan without feeling pushed out the door. For example our GP standard appointment gives you 30 mins of time with the GP which is a lot of time when compared to the NHS 5 min rushed appointments.

Patients who choose The Doctor Clinics often mention that the convenience alone makes a difference: easy online booking, evening availability, no registration hurdles, and clear pricing. It’s not about replacing your NHS GP, but about having a reliable option when you need timely medical advice, reassurance or a second opinion without waiting weeks.

What are the drawbacks of using a private gp?

The main drawback of using a private GP is that private clinics don’t replace your NHS GP — they sit alongside them. That means things like repeat prescriptions, ongoing long-term condition management or referrals into certain NHS pathways still need to go through your NHS practice. Private GPs also can’t issue NHS prescriptions, and some medications (especially controlled drugs) are more tightly restricted in the private setting.

There’s also the cost to consider. You’re paying for fast access and longer appointments, but it’s still an additional expense on top of your usual NHS care. Most patients who come to The Doctor Clinics feel the benefits outweigh this — especially when they need quick answers, more time with a doctor or help navigating the system — but it’s important to know how the two systems work together so you can get the best of both.
